The word ‘design’ itself comes from the Latin ‘dignus’, meaning ‘of line.’ The verb ‘design’ also derives its name from the same root. So ‘designing’ or ‘designing process’ would be the generic term for a range of processes which, collectively, have as their objective the successful implementation of some desired entity or result. In engineering, however, ‘designing’ is used to refer to a specific set of measurements, properties, and other details of a structure, component, module or machine. To understand the criticality of design thinking framework, it helps first to understand the process involved. There are two phases involved here: ideation and emulation. Iide refers to the initial stage of conceptualization, in which a firm will explore and evaluate options open to it, i.e. ‘visioning.’ Emulation occurs after this exploration, with the aim of bringing to fruition those that were originally considered as feasible solutions.
To illustrate, let us take a look at some typical situations and problems. When faced with a set of requirements, a firm will usually start with a pencil and paper. It may even jot down notes along the way, while engaging other people to help with the assessment. However, after the requirements have been examined and reviewed, the designer will need to work with developers, marketing executives, accountants, and other support personnel. This is the stage where the design thinking process occurs.
As discussed earlier, this is the critical first step. In order for designers to be able to generate potential solutions, they must think in terms of both visual and functional requirements. At this point, the design thinking methodology looks like this:
Once the problem statement has been generated and the potential solutions have been identified, designers should then be able to develop an “empathy phase.” This is an important part of the methodology because it allows designers to consider the perspective of others. In doing so, they can come to realize that they share many common points of view, rather than seeing things from a perspective of only their own.
The key to effective design thinking is not just coming to see things from others’ perspectives, but to actually experience them. This is why many professionals refer to the act of’making an observation’ as a form of creativity. By observing how others experience things, a designer can come up with new ways to present or suggest solutions. At the same time, the empathy phase refers to the process by which a designer learns to embrace the perspective of others. By doing so, a designer can build trust and compassion for other people and this can play a critical role in building innovation.
Another way in which designers can develop user experience empathy is by being honest about the limitations of their design functions. Many designers make the mistake of pretending that they can solve all problems. They do not take the time to consider how limited their functions are and they do not consider what users really want. As a result, designers can sometimes miss the mark when designing products that people want to use. For instance, if a designer is designing a website, then it makes sense to take into account the needs of the user in terms of navigating through the site, rather than concentrating solely on making the best possible design for the product.
While we have looked at three steps towards innovation in relation to the three steps towards design thinking, there is one key concept that we have not looked at yet. All three steps are important but they do not really address one of the most fundamental aspects of design thinking. This is the idea that design thinking can be an important driver of innovation. Design thinking is the process by which designers come to understand the needs of others and then design solutions to those needs through their creativity. Design thinking is therefore an important tool for ensuring that innovation takes place in businesses.
